Image recognition for monitoring of insects

Better methods for counting insects are desperately needed given recent observations that insect populations have declined dramatically over the past few decades, with dire consequences in ecosystems.

Since the beginning of 2019, EIS Knowledge Centre Insects, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Radboud University and COSMONiO have been working on the development of a new insect monitoring system: the DIOPSIS insect camera.

The insect camera

Since 2021 Faunabit produces the DIOPSIS insect camera. An advanced, modern system to photograph insects fully automated and to send the photos and associated data.

It is possible to order a camera for purchase or lease. A limited stock is available for direct delivery. If the demand is higher, it is possible to order and build the new series. The delivery of the new series will take place before the beginning of the insect season of 2025.

The camera sends the images to a server via 4G, but it's also possible to manually upload the images. From there they can be processed by the insect image recognition model, managed by Naturalis.

Functionalities of the DIOPSIS web portal:

• Monitor the operation of the camera remotely

• Grant access to photos and sensor readings

• Remotely adjust camera settings, including:

  • photo frequency

  • LED on/off times

  • LED lighting adjustments

• Set up metadata for research
